It’s funny how ‘not to bad’ is actually really positive here in Ireland. How are you? “not too bad”. It sounds like “well, no ones dead, I still have my shitty job” rather than “really good, all my Xmas shopping done, I’m healthy and happy”. Our most positive expressions are inherently negative. Weird. I like to think we’re a pretty positive bunch (!?), we just don’t like to shove it down peoples throats! And that’s what I reckon, a sensitivity to others, a modesty ingrained in us from childhood… so while it sounds a little gloomy it’s actually kind of sweet and lovely.
